Gum Disease Treatment & Periodontal Maintenance
Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile. When plaque and tartar accumulate below the gum line, they can cause inflammation and infection of the gums, a condition known as periodontal (gum) disease.
Untreated gum disease can lead to gum recession, bone loss, loose teeth, and eventually tooth loss. Early diagnosis and treatment can help protect your oral health and prevent further damage.
Signs of Gum Disease
You may benefit from a periodontal evaluation if you experience:
Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
Red, swollen, or tender gums
Persistent bad breath
Gum recession or "longer-looking" teeth
Loose or shifting teeth
Discomfort when chewing
Certain factors can increase the risk of gum disease, including smoking, diabetes, genetics, and inadequate oral hygiene.
Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing)
When gum disease progresses beyond simple gingivitis, a regular cleaning may no longer be enough. In these cases, a deep cleaning—also known as scaling and root planing—may be recommended.
This treatment involves carefully removing plaque, tartar, and bacteria from above and below the gum line, including the root surfaces of the teeth. The goal is to reduce inflammation, eliminate infection, and allow the gums to heal.
Periodontal Maintenance
Following deep cleaning, ongoing periodontal maintenance is often necessary to help keep gum disease under control.
Periodontal maintenance visits are similar to regular cleanings but focus on monitoring gum health and removing bacteria and tartar from areas that are more difficult to keep clean at home.
Depending on your condition, these visits may be recommended every 3 to 6 months.
Protecting Your Gum Health
The best way to prevent gum disease is through:
Daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste
Cleaning between your teeth every day
Regular professional cleanings and examinations
Avoiding tobacco products
Managing medical conditions such as diabetes
